STRINGS FOR ANTIQUE and WOOD RACKETS
Natural Gut Strings have been manufactured for hundreds of years for string music instruments and bows. The first rackets using natural gut strings were produced in Italy in the 16th century.  Natural gut is produced by drying fibers extracted from a part of animal intestine called the serous membrane, or serosa, which contains collagen designed to withstand the stretching and  contraction of the intestine. It is this elasticity that makes the  fibers useful for tennis string.
Our natural gut strings are made specifically for museums and collector's tennis and badminton wood rackets. We recommend a tension of 10lbs (maximum 15 lbs). The Craven Brown (originally called the "Standard") was used in rackets from 1872 to 1920 and the Craven Gold from 1890 to 1955. We do not recommend these strings for modern tennis. There are several brands for modern rackets available which are both cheaper and are coated to make the strings more resilient to weather conditions. Our natural gut strings are hand made in small quantities and often a small variation in colour. The Craven Brown has a very thin coating which easily rubs off with a damp cloth before stringing and gives the grey appearance, once strung, as the original 100+ year string. The Craven Gold retains its colour.

In addition we can supply trebling to order in natural gut for vintage rackets and in sythetic gut for rackets made in the 1960s to 80s. Also natural gut strings can be ordered for dyeing. Many rackets around 1900 had red strings for either mains or cross strings.
